Did anyone play Xwing vs Tie Fighter on Microsoft's Internet Gaming Zone back in the 90's? I put in a lot of time there. Good times...

Yup! Great times! JediMasters, Phantom Squad and so on. Really, great times!
Yeah. I remember. My first real multiplayer experience. Made it to #1 on cases ladder after Vex and Lerris stopped playing. Still have my ICQ number memorized but no idea how to recover a password. T/I 5/5 top 50 only or something like that, right?
Haha what's up guys! Lerris here.
Unfortunately, I was too young to play XvT on the Internet Gaming Zone. I wasn't even allowed to use the internet back then.
But I play XvT (with BoP) via GameRanger from time to time. It's lots of fun. :)
I remember trying to play online a few times, but unfortunately my dial-up Internet connection was so bad that the game was pretty much unplayable for me due to shot-lag. Fortunately they released the Balance of Power expansion which added a single-player mode. It was nowhere near as good was X-Wing or TIE Fighter, but at least it helped me feel like XvT wasn't a complete waste.

Thinking back to those dial-up days really makes me appreciate my current 20Mbit DSL. :)
Yeah, I had a lot of fun there even if I couldn't log as many hours as I'd like... I was still rocking the dial up. I could beat just about anyone in a 1x1 squint duel about 4:1 (if you'll forgive the boasting), but there was a small group of players that could absolutely whomp me, roughly 12:1 . . . It really illustrated the difference between the Aces (a category I liked to include myself in) and the Top Aces (whom were completely beyond me).

My strength was long range deflection shooting, most pilots were dead before they realized they were in range of my guns or that I could anticipate where they were about to be, unfortunately once we closed the distance I was usually mince meat; I don't think I was ever able to properly adapt to the difference between how the AI and real people behaved up close.

lol, oddly enough I enjoyed being whomped, those were the most challenging fights I've ever had, but those pilots probably thought I was a bore. I remember keeping an eye out for them though, and logging on at the oddest hours so I could challenge them, they usually all logged on around the same time.

I believe my handle was Crimson_fury or Crimson_red . . . its been so long
I tried it once or twice. I had ethernet when the game was out (I was in college at the time), but I found the over-reliance on missiles to be really just...not Star Wars. It made dogfighting kinda pointless when you spent half the time dodging missiles.

BoP was much more fun, especially when I played it coop. XvT was really kinda the low point in the series, in my opinion.

Sadly, XWA didn't have great multiplayer. I wish you could've played the campaign (as I recall, you couldn't) in co-op, especially with that patch that let one player fly the ship and another man the turret.

Actually it is possible to play XWA-missions in coop-mode:

We tried playing some XWA, aswell as TFTC and X-Wing Conversion missions in coop mode and it is lots of fun.
Yep, I loved playing that. Was a member of Guild of the Morning Star (Grimace)....held the number one rank for exactly 4 days...then coughed it up to one of the JM's.

Ah the days...the modem, the dial-up, the lost months of youth....
