Back in the "dark times" we had to jump through a lot of hoops to get these classic sims running on our shiny new machines... but some good did come of it. Some very hard-working fans put together a project called Tie Fighter Reconstructed (or Re-Orchestrated).

Why should you care now though? Well, the 1998 release available here on GOG suffers from the compromises of 20th century optical disc delivery.. specifically the ~650MB CD-ROM. to squeeze all that fancy cd-audio onto one disc, they had to cut back on the audio quality of the voice files, and thus reduced them by half their filesize.

Anyway, the Re-whatever pack has all of the ORIGINAL high-quality voice files, already named and organized into their proper folders. you can simply copy them over your GOG installation and enjoy the voice as it was originally intended to be heard.

------ UPDATE ------:
improved voice files AND THE RESTORED SCORE FROM THE ORIGINAL are now available through an updated, GOG-specific release! You don't even have to mess around with CD images or anything-- they made it super simple to drag 'n' drop your way to Imperial Glory.

Executor-sized thanks to GOG user InfinityBCRT and the crew who put this together and made it available to the community, including musician Daniel ‘Yitzchak’ Bennett. Great work all-around for helping restore this classic!

Cool, you should contact GOG to see if they can use these or at least sticky this thread. :)

If we want a sticky, i should probably bother to write up a more detailed tutorial...
Thank you! That's very useful to know :)

Many good things have come from people trying to fix old games to run on new systems. Often resulting in improving the games far more than the original developer ever managed.
Thanks kristenmaxwell for sharing this. It has been several years since I last played Tie Fighter and back than we didn't even have this Reconstructed project (or I wasn't aware of it).
Thumbs up

For whatever reason I'm not allowed to create a new topic here but I just updated the full mod for the GOG version

What it includes:
- Re-orchestrated music tracks by Daniel 'Yitzchak' Bennett based on the DOS version of Tie Fighter. This restores the awesome original soundtrack of Tie Fighter (which was removed from the Windows version in favour of John Williams' score). However, it is not dynamic like the DOS version
- Menu music is MUCH higher quality
- Higher Quality speech based on the DOS CD edition of the game
- Patch by Pete Jatz which fixes some issues with the music in the game and restores some spots where music was not playing in the Windows version

Hit the link in the OP to see it.

I just tested this and it works PERFECTLY! A huge thank you, this is an incredible improvement!

This thread/post should be stickied and mentioned by GOG.com in the game's info screen. Now the only thing lacking is the dynamic iMuse but we're very close to a perfect TIE Fighter version with the help of this.

You need a certain amount of reputation in order to create new threads.

Anyway, thank you very much for the update. Downloading it now. :) The OP should be updated.

Made a new, hopefully "sticky friendly," post with the update and some much needed credit to the creators:

I recommend closing this thread now.
