Back in the "dark times" we had to jump through a lot of hoops to get these classic sims running on our shiny new machines... but some good did come of it. Some very hard-working fans put together a project called Tie Fighter Reconstructed (or Re-Orchestrated).
Why should you care now though? Well, the 1998 release available here on GOG suffers from the compromises of 20th century optical disc delivery.. specifically the ~650MB CD-ROM. to squeeze all that fancy cd-audio onto one disc, they had to cut back on the audio quality of the voice files, and thus reduced them by half their filesize.
Anyway, the Re-whatever pack has all of the ORIGINAL high-quality voice files, already named and organized into their proper folders. you can simply copy them over your GOG installation and enjoy the voice as it was originally intended to be heard.
------ UPDATE ------:
improved voice files AND THE RESTORED SCORE FROM THE ORIGINAL are now available through an updated, GOG-specific release! You don't even have to mess around with CD images or anything-- they made it super simple to drag 'n' drop your way to Imperial Glory.

Executor-sized thanks to GOG user InfinityBCRT and the crew who put this together and made it available to the community, including musician Daniel ‘Yitzchak’ Bennett. Great work all-around for helping restore this classic!
