Greetings. I seem to be having trouble running the game. It won't let me set a resolution from Shadows.exe, and upon starting the game, its says "Failed to initialize 3d hardware". I can set a resolution from the game's original launcher, but, it still crashes with the same error. Windows 10 64-bit, Geforce GTX 970m, Intel Processor. I might end up having to run this in my VM...

I have the same issue; cannot set up a resolution from the main desktop launcher but the original launcher will show the resolution. Whenever I try to play; same issue: "Unable to initialize videocard in 3D" error. Running Windows 10 64bit; GTX 980. Tried switching compatibility modes/running as admin. None of these fix it.
Try dgVoodoo:
http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2.html

Put the files into both the Shadows and the Sdata folder.

That did the trick. Thank you!
Hello! can you please be more specific as to which files? That link takes me to a page with a bunch of download links.

Download the newest version (dgVoodoo v2.51). Then copy dgVoodooSetup.exe, DDraw.dll and D3DImm.dll to both game folders.
Glad you got is resolved. Weird though. I have a Nvidia GT 730 and it worked just fine.

Same, I have the same specs except with a 1070. I tried everything listed here and swapping all those files in different ways and uninstalling and reinstalling the game over and over and it just crashes before even bringing up the launcher, or crashes upon trying to actually start the game from the launcher
I get the same issue and error message but I'm on win xp. That link seems to be dead but from what I can tell, it's for dx11. I have dx 9.0c.
