I thought the GOG version of the game would work like a charm but it's the exact same as the Steam version.
Every time the game tries to go to the menu, it crashes on me instantly.
Any simple fixes for this?
Can you post more info, like your OS, HW specs, etc.
My OS is WIndows 7 x64 bit and the specs are

intel core i3-2350M

intel HD graphics 3000

Well, here it says that the game is not playable - http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-034345.htm

But try this - 1. Find the intro movies files in the installation folder
2. Rename, move or remove the following files: biologo.bik, leclogo.bik, legal.bik.
Nope still the same problem :(
Go to the menu, as in at the very beginning? So that you're not able to play at all?

It may be a driver/directx issue, but for starters, try editing swkotor.ini and set Fullscreen to 0.

Is your game installed to a non-system folder (i.e. not in Program Files)? Are you able to play other 3d games fine?

I have the same problem. Every time the game tries to go to the menu, it crashes, I can hear the music and the cursor appears. The first time I came in the menu, then it crashed every time before the menu.

I've tried everything from the topic, but the game still does not work.

Hardware:

Intel i5-3210M

Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M

Hi, SebGure. Make sure KOTOR is set to use the GeForce GT 630M instead of the Intel HD. It will be in the nVidia Control Panel. I don't have access to my desktop at the moment, but you should be able to search out the instructions online.

Hi,

Are you sure it is actually really crashing? Usually it (just like Knights off the Republic (KOTOR) 2) just minimises while you can still hear the music! The reason for this is that the game is reasonably old and cannot recognise the graphics card / driver. (In a way it kind of runs to mum ;-).) What you can do is for example try and click on the KOTOR icon in the task bar. Sometimes this works. By the way, this minimising can also happen after or before a cinematic is supposed to be played - then all you need to do is click on the KOTOR icon in the taskbar and continue.

It rarely happens that the game really crashes.

I was really surprised that GOG's version worked so well out of the box. I have the retail DVD version (KOTOR 1&2) and they were an absolute nightmare to get to run - in the end I solved the problem by doing what I described under the following: http://www.gog.com/forum/star_wars_knights_of_the_old_republic/will_it_work_on_gtx_500_series

You might like to edit your swkotor.ini file

Here is my version for example (graphics section):

[Graphics Options]
RefreshRate=60
Height=960
Width=1280
V-Sync=1
Anisotropy=16
Frame Buffer=1
Anti Aliasing=8
Texture Quality=2
Emitters=1
Grass=1
Soft Shadows=1
Shadows=1
Brightness=57
EnableHardwareMouse=1
FullScreen=1
Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1

Cheers

No problem. Glad to help. =)

I'm not able to start the game at all, it changes my desktop settings (something about changing to windows basic) and then waits a second and reverts them and nothing has happened.

I'm on Windows 7 64 bit laptop
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300 Series

I've tried all the things suggested in the thread, and anything else I can think of. I've tried compatibility modes and running as administrator.

I did the config thing and scanned and I've attached the log, which suggests my OS is wrong and I don't have OpenGL... which I know isn't true as everything else runs fine.

Any ideas?

Edit: Nevermind, I found something in support and it works now (starts anyway).

http://www.gog.com/support/star_wars_knights_of_the_old_republic/launch_crash_on_atiamd_graphics

That one, for anyone else with ATI cards.

Well this is funny.
I went into the swconfig, disabled movies and it started working.

Someone else already suggested this as well. The movies on the boxed versions of both games were giving me such terrible problems that I eventually went ahead and deleted them all. The games have been working fine ever since, and I don't even get the minimizing to desktop anymore. It's a small loss, considering that most of the movies aren't that impressive anyway.
