An unelegant yet useful workaround is taking a screenshot. I really doubt there is another workaround without lagging the game.

The best thing you can probably do after the level has loaded is to hit Esc to get to the menu and click Objectives to see what you are supposed to do.

Yes, but this only shows your main objective. The loading screen also shows a bit of the story afair.

I've not picked this one up yet but I assume something like Throttle would work. It basically eats up 95% of your CPU so that older games that have timer issues still work.
