First off, I use a laptop that heats up and tends to burn my wrist when i play FPS games (due to the position of the WASD keys) so to circumvent this (as I've no money for a gaming rig) I plug in a wired 360 controller and use Pinnacle Game Profile (Gamepad) to map keys and create a profile for specific games.

It's normally quite easy and works a treat but this is the first game I've run that uses DOSBox. I've set it all up and made a custom mapped profile, linking it to the shortcut so the game launches when I run the profile. My problem is that It doesn't actually launch the Dark Forces game, it launches DOSbox.

I'm not technically inclined and would prefer (due to lack of understanding) not to mess with Gogs Dark Forces DOSbox setup, so I've come to ask if anyone is familiar with a way to setup my 360 controller to play Dark Forces with minimal fuss (and If they'd be willing to explain how) or If anyone is familiar with Pinnacle and knows how to make it launch Dark Forces (whether through DOSbox or by bypassing it) so I can finally play it.

To add, I've tried to directly launch the Dark Forces .exe named DARK in the main folder through Pinnacle, but it requires the Dark Forces floppy (which adds to why I'd rather not mess with what gog's done to make it all run on modern systems) so that seems to be a no-go route.

Any help would be grand and apologies if this is dealt with somewhere else but google isn't helping.
Cheers

Hello Shayaft,

I am not an expert at Pinnacle or DOSBox, but it looks to me like the application shortcut for DOSBox has a bunch of modifiers on it, and these are what is telling the program to launch DB and then DF. So, when Pinnacle tries to launch the file it doesn't have that additional info, and launches the program only.

("C:\GOG Games\Star Wars - Dark Forces\DOSBOX\DOSBox.exe" -conf "..\dosbox_DF.conf" -conf "..\dosbox_DF_single.conf" -noconsole -c exit)

Unfortunately, when I was playing around in Pinnacle I couldn't find a way to add all of those extra option to where you give it the exe file. Maybe someone who knows what their talking about will also comment, but in the meantime, the onlu workaround I can see is to edit the DF profile under Game Profiles, go to the settings tab, and check the box that says "Do not start the executable file when this program is launched". Hit OK and save.

Now, you can start the profile running, but it won't launch DOSBox. You can start the game normally from the shortcut on your desktop, and the profile should be running in the background, allowing the controller to work; it's another step but at least you won't be touching the machine while it's hot. You might have to turn off joystick support in game, not sure if they will conflict.
Hey dlktrazer thanks for the reply and help.

I've run through what you've suggested and it does seem to be an improvement. Unfortunately it's still not wanting to play ball the way I wish and doesn't correctly pick up the keys or joystick movements.

I've tried some other configurations using your suggestion as a springboard, but to no avail. Atleast the game will boot up properly so it's a huge step in the right direction.

With some further research I've found people successfully use Xpadder with DOSbox so i'm going to give that a shot as an alternative.

Again thank you for the assistance. I hope we can find a way to solve this in the future.
