IagainstI: I can also confirm that running the game in Windows Compatibility mode Win XP SP 3 with async=0 set in the sfc.ini file and running the Video Settings and setting Driver to software works for Win10. There appears to be a graphic issue on the strategic map, I think, but I was able to successfully play missions, at least.
I actually still have the old CD from back in the day for the game. Had the Neutral Zone Edition (Feds + Klingons only) for years, then maybe a five years later got the full game. Trying to play it again now on Windows 10, I'd already set compatibility to XP SP3 and couldn't even finish a mission. Going to software mode, I was able to finish my first one in years with it. Thanks.

Um, why use software mode when you can have full hardware compatibility if you just edit sfc.ini with async=0?

geneslicer: i have had these issues with many games from gog and also same issues with some steam games to the point i was getting refunds because they didnt work .... after a couple of weeks digging about on forums these are the fixes i found

step 1. Compatibility mode set to Windows XP (Service Pack 3) for SFC.exe

step 2.[ Mouse] async=0 in the sfc.ini hwblit=1 directly under it

step 3. if you are on windows 7, windows 8/8.1 or windows 10 and this does not work then you must go and eneble your legacy components

1. programs and features
2. turn features on or off
3. when it pops up look for legacy components and make sure it has directplay in the forlder then tick it so its active
this fix will now work for 95% of gogs old school games

i hope this helps .. on some games you may need to download extra sound files also but ppl have posted links to download these aswell

Ereg87: Stupid Question. With these settings is it not possible to get the game to play in full screen or will it always reduce the amount of moniter in use?

Once again sorry if this is a retarded question.
alas no this only gets the old school games to boot up and work as win 10 disables the legacy runtiming so you will have to go into the games config files to change the screen rez if you wanted the black bars gone

mvmiller12: I am interpreting your message to mean that the game leaves black bars on the left and right hand side of the screen, yes? If so, then no - the game was designed for the older 4:3 "square" monitors, and will either appear centered (with those bars on either side) or stretched on the newer 16:9 or 16:10 widescreen monitors. Personal preference, but IMHO the bars are better than the stretching (the stretching makes circles into ovals).
no my msg was meant for ppl to get the game initially working due to win10 legacy drivers being disabled by default ... unless it was in response to the other person

Windows 7 comes with DirectPlay installed and there is no entry on "Windows Features" to turn "Legacy Components" on or off in Windows 7.
