I've tried re-installing this game 4 times now, and can't get anywhere with it.

I've followed all the recommendations from the other threads, to no avail.

I get as far as a black screen, with the in game cursor locked to the upper left and rapidly flickering, and a text cursor in
the center of the screen.

I've installed through Galaxy, and standalone. With and without compatibility modes and admin privileges. Changed the application name, and tried modifying the .cfg files with the necessary HD and frame rate caps, but since it won't fully launch the first time, most of the .cfg file parameters aren't even set yet.

Can anyone help with this, I've been looking forward to playing this game again for years and this is a little disheartening.

Specs:

ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming II
AMD Ryzen 5 3600x
ATI Radeon RX 5500 XT
16 GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
Win10 Pro x64

Unfortunately I can't help you. On the other hand - I am experiencing the exact same issue. Game is unplayable as it won't finish launching - just hangs on a black screen with the Federation Badge Icon cursor stuck in the upper left corner.

I am running an Intel CPU with an NVIDIA GPU so whatever issue this is - it ain't specifically H/W related.

1. Limiting Frame Rate
Try adding seta com_maxfps "120" to the cfg file that has your username in the game its /base/ folder.
Very powerful GFX Chips can go above 700 or 800 FPS and that could lock-up the game.

All the other cfg files in /base/ (the cfg files in other folders are required) are from the game Beta and Development Testers and can be deleted.

You can also use +set com_maxfps 120 as startparameter if you create a shortcut to the game, so you do not need to change the cfg if you prefer that.

2. Renaming game Executable
Try renaming the ef2.exe executable file of the game to quake3.exe
It might only display as ef2 without the .exe, there are two symbols
similar, the bigger one is the executable.

3. Avoiding Software conflicts
Close all other applications and software.
Especially streaming recording and other GFX or 3D Software.

Please let us know what fixed it or if it is still not fixed.
I am sure we can fix what ever it is, because you seam to be fine on the Hardware side.

4. It is most likely not a Problem of ?
- OpenGL since it creates a Window and does not exit to console
- Direct-X issue since it does not exit to console

5. What could it likely be?
- High FPS above the 800 range. Limiting the fps will resolve this issue (extremely high probability)
- A Software or Drive issue (medium to low probability)
- A dual Monitor or Multiple Display setup or the related software (low probability)
- A CPU Architecture Incompatibility (low probability)

Ok - update - I got it to work.

I added the following three lines to the [username].cfg file:

seta r_customheight "1080"
seta r_customwidth "1920"
seta r_mode "-1"

The file is in the "base" subdirectory and is literally named after your Windows document folder username, So my folder name is truncated as Windows is wont to do these days so the file name for me was alewi.cfg

I then had to reboot the computer after making this change and the game fired right up. Note that the game did *not* fire up after making the change without the reboot.

What resolution did you use when it did not work ?
1600x1200 is known to have issues on some computers.
1366 x 768 is known to have issues on some mobile (Laptop/Tablet) devices.
That's just it - I never set a resolution as the game did not work right out of the gate - it simply never launched and never gave me any option to set any configuration.

When I went in to edit that username.cfg file it was barebones - it had keybindings and a couple of tertiary graphical settings and that was it. It did not have any resolution lines so I added my own - the 1080x1920 ones, plus the mode = "-1" line as I read on a website that Quake III Engine required that line if you were going to use a resolution higher than 1200x1600.
.
Excellent, I shall add this to my list of troubleshooting suggestions.
Maybe gog will provide a launcher that allowes to limit the Frames and set a resolution :)
Unfortunately, none of these fixes are working for me...

If you are up for it we can try together to resolve it, I am confident we can do it.
Send me a private message then.
I'm starting to have a weird launch issue as well. The game worked fine for me at first, loaded up no problem and playing through fine. This morning when I click to start the game things load up then the screen goes black but instead of going to the intro/menu/etc it all minimises to show my desktop, clicking it doesn't do anything but I can hear it running.

Find it really strange as it worked fine at first then suddenly this, and I haven't changed anything. Tried reinstalling and a few fixes I've seen on here but nothing is helping.

PC name. It should be in the "base" folder inside your Elite Force 2 game folder. You can open cfg files with the normal text editor.
