Hi All,

Just brought this to replace my knackered CD copy. Launch game, cutscenes play ok but the main menu is frozen. I can hear sounds when i mouse over the pictures, but no animations occur and the screen does not update if i click on any option except quit. Alt tabbing seems to let me refresh the image, and once i can get in game it works fine, but its a tedious way to play! All menus i have tried thus far have the same problem, including the in game menu. Any thoughts? I have installed direct X 9 and am running in admin mode , and compatibility for windows XP.

Hope everyone else is having more luck on this game then me!
Here the same… Hope there will be a bugfix
Are you using the stand alone installer or GOG Galaxy?
Did you make those changes (DX 9, compatibility, admin mode) right off the bat or did you try running the game as installed first? I installed via Galaxy, made no changes and it just runs, so far flawlessly. For reference, I am running on Win 10, really old Intel I7 3770, GTX 1060 6GB, 32GB system RAM.

EDIT - Also, did you make any changes via the DX Wrapper config app that comes with the game? I found that setting MSAA to anything other than "Set by application (Default)" results in a blank menu screen with working sounds. If you have altered the anti aliasing settings in any way (even forcing it in your graphics card configuration), it could cause issues.

Man, GOG used to make the games work on modern pc's. I guess they let it slip a bit nowadays. We have to do the runarounds.

In my experience, the game does "just work". I installed it, launched it and played it, no problem. That alone is a huge improvement over my original disk copies of the games which can't even be installed (the first one) or don't run in a remotely stable fashion without a bunch of modding and tweaking. It was only after I tried tweaking the GOG version that I introduced problems, which honestly should be expected, since I was forcing a setting onto a game that was made when MSAA wasn't even a concept.
I had the same issue as the OP, the one thing i noticed was a very quick error during the install. So quick I only got "bad command line" from it before it disapeared.

Im running it on a non admin account and did the install on this account but used the admin details for the machine to allow it to install. I switched out to the main admin account and the game worked fine. Here are the steps i took to get it working:

1. - Logged into primary admin and into gog galaxy on that account, unistalled the game from here and then deleted the game folder in the programs location on my hard drive
2 - elevated the account i wanted to use the game on to a local admin
3 - logged off the main admin and then back onto the main account i wanted to use
4 - re-installed the game on the now admin local account, this time no error message

After that the game just worked without issue, this was all done on Windows 10 Pro with the latest updates from Microsoft.
HI all,

I am using the standalone installer. I think it may have something to do with the graphics card, I have just run it on a desktop pc, windows 10 with RTX 2070 card, and it seems to run fine. I was previously using it on a laptop with an integrated card - an intel IRIS 520 or something like that.

I initially tried running the game normally on my laptop and i had the issues as described previously. I tried running in admin mode and downloading DX9.

Thanks for the advice cogadh, will try this tomorrow!

So I had the same problem and I realized something:

My computer has two Graphics processors, an onboard Intel HD, and a Geforce card.

I switched priority to the Geforce card in the control panel, and menus worked! And the game is running fine now.

My computer was most likely using the Intel card, which was failing to run the game properly.
high rated
I had the same experience as YGTS above on my laptop.

Game would start up but hang on every attempt to use the menu buttons.

I changed the settings in NVIDIA control panel to use the "high performance nvidia" gpu, and the buttons all work, without locking up the game.

Instructions:
Right click on desktop.
Select NVIDIA Control Panel
Select the "Program Settings" tab in Manage 3D settings.
Select the Program (number 1.), "Armada 2"
Select High-Performance NVIDIA Processor (number 2.)
Select "Apply" at the bottom.

Also, Armada 2 didn't show up at first, so I had to click "Add" and then browse for the program, under C:, then Programs x86, then GoG Galaxy, then Games, then select Star Trek Armada 2, then click the Application file, and add it to the drop down menu.

Only after I did that could I select to use my 2070 Super, rather than the default which seems to be the integrated Intel graphics.

Hope this helps anyone else having the stuck menu bug.

One last suggestion from the other topic. I see that you downloaded this on the 13th as I did. After doing a number of heroic actions and patches, I was speaking to Tech Support where we came to this solution.

---------------

Upon your suggestion, I have tried downloading the offline installer one more time. This time, it seems to be working. At first, it stated that it was syncing to the GOG Galaxy Cloud but I have uninstalled GOG Galaxy and then reinstalled the offline version. It still works. As such, it seems that it was just a bad download/install.

----------------------------

In my case, I found that it worked on Galaxy but not on the offline installer. Long story short, it seems that, while we were all stampeding to download Armada 1 and 2, some of us got server hiccups

As such, you may want to try deleting the offline installer you have and redownload it to see if that fixes the problem.

thank you so much this was the method that finally made the game work on my windows 10
So you can move your mouse, hear sound, but graphics are frozen? Tabbing in and out updates the screen?

First quick solution, then a description for the tech savvy and DIY peoples.

[QUICK FIX]

(1) download "Armada2.cmd" from (2) Place "Armada2.cmd" in your "Star Trek Armada II" folder
(3) Right click Armada2.cmd, "Run as administrator"
(4) Play the game! You're done!
(5) It should be working now, you don't need to be here anymore

[FOR TECH PEOPLE]

File source can be seen here without downloading: Playing with the registry can be dangerous, so I'll just tell you what's done, not the steps to do it.

Compatibility settings can be found in the registry at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

We change the value of "D:\<Your Install Path>\Star Trek Armada II\Armada2.exe" from "DWM8And16BitMitigation" to "HIGHDPIAWARE"

The game really doesn't like "DWM8And16BitMitigation", deleting the registry key may also work, however the working game default appears to be "HIGHDPIAWARE", so I stuck with that.

[THE FILE]

If for any reason the web site link is down, copy everything after this sentence into a text file and save it as "Armada2.cmd"

echo off

@echo,

@echo,
@echo Place this file in Armada 2 folder, right click this file, Run as Administrator, try to start the game

Tried this and it worked! How strange, I would have thought the game would just fail to download or something. Learn something new every day :)

Many thanks and merry christmas all!
