...and you have a gamepad plugged in (particularly if you have it plugged in somewhere difficult to reach like I do), there is a solution.
1. Enter the Star Control 1 path in Windows Explorer (by default it should be something like "C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Star Control 1 and 2\Star Control 1").
2. Open the file dosboxSC1.conf with Notepad or Wordpad.
3. Scroll down to the section [joystick]
4. You'll see a line with "timed=false". Change this to "timed=true" (without the quotes of course).
5. Save the file and quit Notepad.
6. Run Star Control 1.
Honestly, you'd think that GOG's quality control would catch these kinds of issues sometimes.
