I couldn't find it in the manual, and some tip and trick pages say just hit escape. What is supposed to happen? Does the ship turn red by any chance? Do you escape instantly, or is there a delay? Is there a cool-down period after each use? Thank you in advance for any help.

PS I have the gizmo that allows me to escape (did the space station quests), I know that you don't start with it , and if you try to leave Sol system right away, you get bombarded with probes, and die..

<ESC> is indeed the key to hit (though it may be possible to remap that to another key, I'm not sure). Does it work if you try to escape with one of your "escort" ships? It's the same key. So perhaps test that out, if you have any escorts yet.

Yes, the ship stops, and begins to pulse red for... five seconds? About that - enough time to take serious damage if you are positioned badly... and then the ship warps out of combat.

As you know, you don't have the device early in the game.

For your flagship to warp out requires 5 or 10 units of fuel - if you don't have that much, perhaps it won't work.

Later in the game, (just before the end) you will also lose use of the emergency escape warp-device, but I'm assuming that's not the issue here!
