Im trying to get Star Control 1 working on my computer.I can startup the game game fine and dont seem to have any problems until I get to the actual ship battles, I cant use what ever prconfigured controls there are for this section because all I seem to be able to do is move, how would I reset the original controls from the manual. Im kinda new to this and may be going about this the wrong way. what settings do I need to change/create to make this game playable? I'd really appreciate any help I could get

I'm having the exact same problem. I can turn and shoot, but the keys are wrong. And I can't figure out how to thrust.
For the Alliance, the keys appear to be WASD, with SHIFT as fire... and I still don't know what key is for special.

And when I bang the shift key repeatedly, Windows 7 interrupts my game. Is there a way to change the key settings?

Nevermind; I solved my own problem. I had to disable the sticky keys popup. Info on how to do this in WIndows 7 is here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-the-irritating-sticky-filter-keys-popup-dialogs/

For the Alliance, it's WASD, SHIFT=fire, TAB=special.
