So I wanted to play Spelunky with my gamepad (Logitech Dual Action) which always worked for my games up until now.
But Spelunky does not even recognice the gamepad is plugged in, and everywhere on the internet it was told that it should be configured with the config application which seems not to be included in the gog version.
So any suggestions what to do?

You need to download JoyToKey, the program automatically recognizes your controller and highlights every button you press, all you have to do is to assign each one to a corresponding key on the keyboard which does something in the game. You don't link JoyToKey with any files in the game you want to use it with, it just has to run in the background while you play.

I was also wondering how to get the game to recognize my gamepad, and I was hoping it was possible without 3rd party apps... But it looks I'm out of luck.3
I wonder if the game ONLY recognizes X360 gamepads?

So you bough the game? Well, for all I know X360 pad is the only one that works out of the box at least for now, which is disappointing, but JoyToKey makes the game play just as good with any other controller and it's easy to set up. Worked for me in the past with other games also, just download it and you're good to go.

Well, as far as I see, JoyToKey is shareware, so after some time, I'd have to purchase it... which I'm not inclined to do for just one game, even if it's just $7. I might reconsider later.
I guess I'll have to stick to the keyboard (for now).

You could try Xpadder instead, I believe it is officially freeware:

http://www.xpadder.com/

EIDT: Wikipedia says that version 5.3 and earlier are officially freeware, later versions are commercial. But v5.3 will probably work fine.

As far as I can tell there's no trial limit, I use this program for almost a year now and nothing popped up so far nor there was any instance that it refused to work. Supposedly the full version comes with some additional features, but the site doesn't specify what they are.

Thanks, I'll probably try it then.

I downloaded version 5.3, and it said my OS wasn't compatible because it wasn't Windows 200/XP/Server 2003/Vista...

That's annoying. Hopefully Joy2Key will work for you, then.
You could also try the Xbox 360 controller emulator. Been a while since I used it, but I remember it working well with one of my off brand controllers.
Ok thanks for your help guys.

*rant*
I am glad you helped but now I am feeling dissappointed in the game, I hate using third party programs... why is it that I would need an xbox pad... really stupid -.- ... but lesson learned, not buying games anymore before confirming they work with normal gamepads as well...
*rant end*

Aside from the occasional "if you like it, please buy" popup message at startup, it works fully with no expiration... i've used it for quite a while now
Glad you got it working. I haven't been so lucky and now the official forums has just turned to "Deal With It" mode.

Really wish GOG offered a refund in cases like this.

You had no success even with Joy2Key or similar sodtware mentioned above?
Regardless of the game, those should work around any pad issue, more or less, if the pad itself is at least recognized by the OS

Yeah, it really does suck that a lot of PC games now a days seem to only support the Xbox 360 controller. I went out and bought the wireless one with the adapter just so I don't have to bother with third party software anymore, but the damn things are so expensive that if you only need it for one game it's not even worth it.

Also, I know what you mean about the Spelunky forums. I went there to ask about the PC port when they announced the HD remake, and I got a lot of angry comments for no reason at all. Most of the people there seem to be console kiddies and/or the typical non-helpful arrogant official forum dwellers.

Edit: Do hope there is a fix for more controller support. It'd be a shame if people weren't able to enjoy this game, because it really is awesome.
