Just thought I should be helpful and set up a few links to the essential mods and miscs for this game:

TDM Modpack : This is an AI mod so if you are going to play single player this one is a must.
Link: http://tdm.otaku42.de/

spaceempires.net: Fansite with mods for both Space Empires 4 and 5. Some of the mods includes the AI mod above
so they improve the game a lot. Link to downloads page for Space Empires 4 :

thank you for the links.

Could you tell me why the TDM Modpack is essential? What am I missing without using this mod?

Thanks.

It seems they find the default AI inadequate.
FYI, the GOG version contains all of the major community mods in a folder in the install called "extras", so you don't need to search around elsewhere to get the mods - in addition, in the extra folder there is a text document with short descriptions of each mod.
I don`t have the GOG version, but yes, some versions have an extra folder with mods. These might be be outdated though so check for more recent versions if you want to play them.
I don't like wading into a huge list of mods without knowing what's good or not, so can someone make a recommendation for any good graphical or content mods, including the improved AI?
I sifted through the available mods and found very few that interested me. One thing I HATE about mods is that often times they stand in stark contrast with the original designers' vision of what the game should be and look like. For example, with the TDM mod, a few of the race portraits are embarrassingly bad and just ruin the look of the game for me. Totally amateurish junk.

Some of the available ship sets and custom races are interesting though and seem to mesh well with the game, but I haven't investigated them fully yet.

The game is a work of art as it is, no need for mods in my opinion.

To be fair, the vanilla portraits are already some of the worst portraits I've ever seen in my years of TBS/4x gaming. I burst out laughing when I make first contact, especially with kaleidoscope eyes. I can see where you're getting at with many mods completely reworking how things were meant to be, but apparently this game NEEDS the ai patch.

Yeah, the stock AI is pretty atrocious. It's been a while, but I seem to recall the AI deploying ships with ~70% of their tonnage being engines. AI mods are strongly recommended.

As for other mods... Pirates and Nomads was pretty good. Carrier Battles is popular too, although I haven't tried it out yet.
Just finished my first game and yeah, the AI is definitely lacking. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but the computer refused to keep treaties and would constantly fight with me, there was no option to have an ally. So I just spread across the galaxy like a virus and devoured everything in my path :)

Going to try out the TDM mod now with the AI adjustments. Hopefully the AI can now be negotiated with.

Love this game!!!

In the endgame, when you're far more powerful than any other empire, it's working as intended : You become the "big bad empire" that everybody wants to strike down.

That said, the AI is not stellar and I'm looking for a AI mod, too. Tried devnull, but it comes with new races that completely break my immersion (Space Vikings? With big orange space drakkars? Seriously not my cup of tea...), while cutting out some of the default empires. Strange stuff...

You're entitled to an opinion but do you realize that the creators of this game made it extremely easy to mod? They don't share your opinion, do they?
Also, have you met the vanilla AI?
My advice: give the mods a chance, some are just interesting but some are superior to vanilla.
