I beat Solasta Crown of the Magister today. What a wild week it's been. I am sad that I beat it so quickly but there's still content to check out (see below) so I will be playing around with it for a bit longer.

If you like D&D 5th Edition, you will love this game. It's very faithful to the 5e rules and employs them in an elegant way that's super fun. As a player and DM of the tabletop version of D&D, I learned a LOT about the rules I did not know prior to playing this game. The gameplay, especially the combat, is a ton of fun.

A lot of people say the story is lacking. It's not on par with Planescape Torment for sure, but it's a perfectly serviceable fantasy storyline. It's easy to follow, makes sense, and has a few twists and turns that (for me) were unexpected and delightful.

I loved the fact you get to make your whole party but that the personalities are sort of out of your control to an extent. It gives you the best parts of Icewind Dale NPCs (customization) with the best of Baldur's Gate (unique personalities). Also, it's great that your PCs are just some random adventurers and mostly here for the money (like real D&D characters) and not some sacred "Chosen One."

I like the graphics. They are not AAA, but that is appealing to me. My one complaint is that if you have a monitor with a native resolution of 1440x900 or less (like mine), the models in the static screens (like level up, inventory, stores, etc.) will be blurry. They are still sharp and crisp in the world though, where it really matters.

IMPORTANT TIP BELOW

Please ensure you've done everything you want to do, including sidequests, before moving on with the "Missing Piece" quest. When you get to "Missing Piece" in the main quest, you are at the Endgame. Once you start this you won't be able to go back and do anything else. It is NOT apparent in the game this is the case - it seems like just another step on your journey and BAM you are cut off from the rest of the world map. I had several side quests to do and did not get to do them became of it.

Good to know! Thank-you!

As for the game; I completely agree with you. The very 1st time I booted the game, set my party up and began, it just felt like a tabletop session. Snarky little quips between party members, nothing mean or overtly demeaning...just sharp little barbs as would be exchanged between travelling companions on the road.

Once I finish my play through, I intend to start again with a different party configuration. for now, I went traditional...Paladin, Ranger, Cleric, Wizard. (Old school squishy wizard) I am thinking for my next play through, try something radically different: Wiz w/Sellsword background (mdm armor proficiency), Life Cleric and 2 Rogues is one I am considering.

Sounds cool! My party consisted of : Human Paladin (Devotion), Half-Elf Rogue (Darkweaver), Dwarf Cleric (Life), and Elf Wizard (Shock Arcanist).

They all turned out pretty dang powerful in the end. I don't know if I'd ever NOT play with a Life Cleric after this - because their healing spells actually heal a decent amount. I got an NPC healer at one point who lacked the life bonuses and her heals were almost not even worth casting.

Favorite Magic Items:
Boots of Striding and Springing - from antiquarians, lets you carry anything and not be encumbered.
Cloak of Arachnidia - random loot, protects from poison and lets you walk on walls - amazing for my rogue - while I found this as random loot you can buy the slippers of spider climbing from the antiquarians that let you walk on walls - serious a great thing to have

Honorable Mention
Greataxe of Sharpness - Requires a blood ruby, +2 hit and damage and +1d10+2 lightning on hit, what is crazy about this weapon is that all of the other "sharpness" weapons that require a blood ruby are just +2 hit and damage, only this one inexplicably deals an additional 1d10+2 lightning, sadly I did not get around to making this until late game

Spells That Kick Butts
Spiritual Weapon (free extra fighter)
Healing Word (everyone already knows this)
Spectral Guardians (free damage every round!)
Daylight (makes vampires go away)
Greater Invisibility (cast on your mage and he's practically invincible for the rest of the fight)
Mind Twist (you know how Mind Flayers have that "mind blast" thing? well this is that in a mage spell, a must have at high level!)
Insect Plague (damage every round and the enemy is blind within it, drop other cloud spells like stinking cloud or cloudkill inside the plague for extra mayhem, this spell is very useful in the last fight, wink, wink)
good to know about the great axe. My Paladins have all been sword and shield, so they could impose disadvantage in defense of a comrade once/combat round. I have thought about trying the two handed weapon variety and specialty, for the reroll option on a 1 or 2 damage.

I have found that stealthy archers, are almost obscenely capable at killing. The idea of TWO such characters in a party, while still haveing healing and crowd control AOE spells, sounds VERY appealing to me. Maybe instead of 2 Rogues, do Rogue and Ranger and make the ranger a great weapon wielder in addition to the bow....
Well probably a little late to the party, but I have to mention my favourite loot and spells as well :D

My party consisted of: Half-Elf Ranger (Shadow Tamer), Elf Wizard (Loremaster), Halfling Rogue (Shadowcaster) and Dwarf Cleric (life)

I spent some time rolling the dice to get mid-90s for all my characters; except my Halfling Rogue who had 3 18's with an average of 16 without me having to touch the dice. My characters were probably overpowered, but this is the first D&D based game I played since BG2 to give me the option of rolling for a better score, so that is what I did :D

Favourite Magic Items:
-Warden Blade: +1 to attack, +1 to AC and it has the poweful AOE Spirit Guardians spell built in! Had to be crafted and since this was pre-patch where you couldn't purchase longswords I needed to redo a short dungeon to get a primed longsword.
-Cloak of Arachnidia: permanent spider walk with the awesome stealthy 'Pass Without Trace' spell built-in. Had this equipped on my Halfling Rogue and this freed up my Ranger to cast other concentration based spells.

Honorable Mention:
-Leather Armour of Survival: +2 to AC & +2 to saving throws. There is better armour out there, but not as stylish when it comes to my ranger.
-Cloak of Displacement: A simple cloak that gives you Permanent Blur. Not as extravagant as the Cloak of Archnidia, but very powerful all the same.

Favourite Spells:
-Pass Without Trace
-Mind Twist (Great AOE damage without friendly fire)
-Phantasmal Killer (Frightened condition debuff as well as hefty damage each round for 1 minute)
-Daylight (Vampires hate this one thing)
-Healing Word (bonus action healing spell with range? yes please)
-Prayer of Healing (out of combat healing, but it only requires a level 2 spell slot and has 6 healing charges which quickly get party members back from the brink).
-Spirit Guardians (AOE damage for any enemy within the radius of the effect).

I'm currently re-educating myself on Pathfinder: Kingmaker so that I can resume my playthrough (left it after hitting level 14), however I do want to give Solasta another go after the sorcerers update happens.

While I have some complaints about the dialogue, I think the graphics are actually pretty nice in Solasta as far as D&D turn-based computer games go (though I haven't played BG3 for reference), and would say they are the best I've seen so far for this genre (better than Pathfinder: Kingmaker), although there are some pretty horrific slow-downs on my rig (especially that area with waterfalls).

@Sarge33rd
Whoops too long typing this out, but at least at the current level cap, the ranged sneak damage from a Rogue archer is pretty hefty, and pretty competitive with my Ranger despite them getting a second ranged attack. I think it would probably be fun to try two Rogues, Ranger and Wizard; and rely more on crafted potions and your Ranger for healing.

Can you explain how pass without trace works?

I was never able to find the recipe for superior or supreme potions, did you?

Pass Without Trace gives up to 6 party members +10 to the Stealth skill for the duration of the spell (1 hour). I found it pretty useful even up until the final fight since it becomes very hard for the enemy to detect me while stealthed even after I attack them.

I didn't actually get any recipe above Potion of Greater Healing. After loading my game, I don't even have any potion beyond the Superior health one in my inventory, so haven't even seen the supreme potion despite finishing the game.

I never found more than 4 superior potions the whole game and no supremes either which is not surprising since the game never leaves Tier 2 and supreme healing is a late Tier 3 early Tier 4 item. I was just curious.
