I played the vanilla game a long way back. I just wanted to know if the rebellion version on GOG is worth it and if the GOG version works properly on win 8.

If you liked the original game, you'll like Rebellion. If you didn't, it's unlikely Rebellion will change your mind.

While I haven't tried it on Windows 8 specifically, I've had no problems either on my Windows 7 or Windows 10 machines.

Just tried to make sense of this non-intuitive - monumental learning curve - nonsensicle game.
Verdict - Save your money - The original Escape Velocity is much better
