GOG-SimCity 4 Deluxe Vers.: 2.1.0.9

Hi, how can I play SC4 Deluxe with normal user-rights? I don't want to give admin-rights to the player-account, but
SC4 always requires admin-rights for installation and playing.

Why wouldn't you? In general, games made before User Account Control was introduced in Windows require this in order to properly go to registry files they require and load and edit game files as needed.

You have 3 options:
1) manually run the game as administrator
2) disable User Account Control from the Control Panel
3) don't play the game.

Your choice.

Because it worked long time ago with the CD-version, and there are a lot of good reasons why a simple user-account should not have admin-rights, you know? Anyway, I don't want to discuss the reasons why.

FYI: the CD-version does not run anymore because of the Windows update KB3086255, that's why i bought the download-version.

Do you know or do you suppose that? Anyway, these are no solutions for me... and nr. 3 is a bad idea :/
Let's wait and see (and hope) if there is a another solution.

There is exactly zero harm in doing so, and it's basically the only way you can get it working properly. Goes for all other pre-2007 games as well. There are only two reasons why it worked for you before:
1) you already did run it as admin and/or had User Account Control disabled
2) you were using Windows XP which didn't have User Account Control to begin with (it was introduced in Vista)

You can remove and hide the update and it'll work like before, though it'll still need admin privileges.

I know it because I've been examining ways games work on modern systems for years now. There is no fourth solution. Anyone else knowledgeable on the matter will tell you the same.

Thank you for your effort.

My question was neither how to uninstall an update nor how to give admin-rights to an account nor how to manage user-accounts.

So please do not misunderstand, but this long time you have examined games does not let you know everything (as like me, I'm working with computers since BASIC-times and have a problem ;)), because the CD-version of SC4 is definitly running without admin-rights on a Win7-system with UAC. That is a fact.

So my question still is: Can I play the downloaded version of SC4 without admin-rights like the CD-version? Thank you.
Hi,

I had no problem with Sim City 3 and admin rights in Windows 10, so the "pre-2007 games" rule cited is not accurate. You will need admin rights to install the game, but I have been able to get the game to run without admin rights on Window 10 Enterprise:

1. On the installer screen, select "options" and change the install directory to "Program Files"
2. After the install completes, right click on the application executable (in a folder called Apps inside the Sim City directory), and select properties.
3. Click on the compatibility settings tab, and select "Change settings for all users."
4. In the pop-up, deselect "Run this program as administrator." and click apply.
5. I had to uncheck it again in the main properties window before clicking "Apply" again.

For best results, edit the shortcut to add the parameters to skip the intro movies. I also run mine in windowed mode in a custom wide resolution. Can't post a URL, so search for "Sim City 4 shortcut parameters" to get all the options.

Good luck!

You can create some batch files to re-enable secdrv.sys and turn it off again afterwards. Not sure if it needs admin rights though.

Hi there and a happy new year :)
Thank you all for your help. I re-installed the game after a long time, now it works o.O
I suppose there was a problem with the rights for the directory "C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\SimCity 4\", so the game wasn't able to wright the game data. I used another directory instead through the parameter "-UserDir:[path]", but meanwhile it is working with the default directory.
