When I was a kid, I never used rails. I'm playing the game again as an adult, and I want to incorporate rails into my city designs... but I'm having trouble figuring how to lay them out such that my sims will actually use them. I end up with maybe 250 riders a day with jam packed roads; not the ideal situation, and a great waste of money.

My next experiment will be to design a road free city (IIRC, I actually managed to make this work... sort of... the first time I broke this game out as an adult) and then add roads to see how quickly they switch to cars. But if anyone here already knows how to use roads in this game, I'd appreciate any tips.

That link doesn't work. And I tried to comb the tree.
I NEVER build trains. Too much damn space needed.
