This sale has me going Sim crazy again and I'm trying all the stuff with them that I have been failing at for decades. Specifically I'd like to make some 'cow' towns but evidently those are more feasible with water towers and such rather than large scale pumps and stuff, but I'm having trouble finding details on how to make those work and how many for how large an area. How do I know where to place them? Do I need a pump and line from a body of water feeding them? Do they need electricity?

Thanks in advance for any ideas or help. :D

From what I recall, they don't need a pump station. Pump stations are only needed in medium and higher density areas. I don't think that a low density area does need a water tower. If water is needed the water drop symbol will appear over a builiding.
You can also use the data view map to visualize water distribution.

Thanks. I really should just go back and start messing around again. 10 years ago I played S2K virtually 24 hours a day then later on #4 but I seem to have forgotten a lot since then.

Same for me :); I just played some of the tutorials to get a grip on things again. They are quite helpful.
I just realized you don't need to your pumps near water, or even any water on the map, to get water. XD. HUH!?

Is SimCity2000 like this? I'm getting killed here ruining my prime beach real estate with fucking pumps when I can put them anywhere! I know you get more if you are near water but does anyone know how big the drop off is?

Nope, SC2000 requires pumps to be placed near water (and it must be fresh water) to be effective, otherwise they produce very little.

In SC4, you instead must be weary of water pollution. Keep your pumps away from industrial development (including farms!) or dumps.

Even that's iffy. My pumps are no where near industry and I still get complaints about it. Of course I'm using one or two pumps for the whole city; maybe if I used two totally different systems and kept the residential pipes away from the industry pipes I'd be in good shape.

Water pollution goes quite far. Keep a wide buffer space from industry. On cities without any industry at all, I've never had water pollution issues.
