Now that the game is running, I get stuttering sound (music, sound effect, voice).

PROBLEM NOT SOLVED.
Let me tell you that turning compatibility mode off-or-on is not the solution. I just purchased the game from GOG this weekend and the game as downloaded and installed is unplayable. The audio (sound) stuttering makes it impossible to play this game. I've turned off the audio hardware acceleration, but the stuttering persists. I' ve also attempted running the game in compatibility mode (windows 2000, windows 98) and in normal windows xp mode. Nothing, as of yet works to solve the problem.
PC configuration: Windows XP, service pack 3; Athlon 64 4000+ processor; GeForce 9800 GT graphics card, 4 Gb RAM, dual channel; Creative Audigy 4 sound card.
