Is there a fix so that I can alt tab out of the game?
When I alt tab it shows the windows bar at the bottom but I cannot get it to switch applications.
also is there a way to play this in windowed mode?

Well, my Silver is Alt-Tabbing without any kind of problems, better than any other game actually.
About windowed mode, the -window command doesn't seem to work here :S
Maybe you could ask someone to make a patch or something?
