FWIW: I encountered the Closet Visitor while playing on the original PC release so this list might be a bit inaccurate.
Someone should just use a guide to try to trigger all of them and check each of them if it's in there or not.

I would post videos from youtube, but I'm so new in the forum that I'm not allowed to do that.

I remember this as well.
I have beaten the game with the shabby doll in the chest since I first took it from Walter, and the chest haunting didn't happen.
So I assume it's not in the game.
Regarding GOG's strange (spooky?) silence about whether this version includes the previously-missing PC hauntings. Anyone got a response from GOG support?

One comment online suggested it's a glitch in the PC SH4 code that disables them but that they are still in the game's code, just deactivated. Apparently "one guy managed to Hex edit the game to re-enable them but someone needs to patch the .exe to enable them permanently. This to say that it's possible to fix. Now it's either the community that will do it or we will see an official patch on GOG which is unlikely."

Is it sure you have done every step to reproduce the haunting?
Is it reproduced with the same exact steps in the PS2 version?

Would you write to the GOG support?

I have created a ticket to them about the issue. Please support this issue or create new tickets about this. I want the attention of GOG to solve this.

https://support.gog.com/hc/en-us/requests/747847?page=1&product=gog
I asked GOG whether any of the tweaks they'd done for this release included the tweak to restore the hauntings that had apparently been disabled (but are present in the code, and apparently restored by one person) by a glitch. This is the reply, for info:

"Hello,
I'm afraid that GOG support is not the best source to ask about gameplay related questions. For such please reach the game's official support.
We are aware of the discussion regarding "hauntings" and we are investigating the topic. As for now we can't promise anything. If the GOG game will be updated we will provide update as soon as possible.
Regards,
GOG.com"
I'm glad they're "investigating the topic". Maybe it's an easy fix, and we'll finally get a port worth paying for.
It's more than Konami ever did.

Bit of a nonanswer but it's something. What's the source on them being in the game's code but not enabled?

In here someone changes the memory of the game, which triggers certain hauntings, which is normally can't be triggered.

In here, someone created a save file for the PC, where almost all of the hauntings are there, but it can be seen only temporary (in this exact save file), so they can't be triggered in normal gameplay.

Now that's interesting. One wonders why they they don't work. Is there a reason they can't be modded in to appear as normal?

As I know (I asked this from GOG, and also kdgog asked this), they are working on this right now. Hope they will be able to solve this.

high rated
Just so people are aware since this thread is full of misconceptions and half answers:

The hauntings are in the game code just like they are in the original PC release. However, these hauntings have a bug where their trigger is broken. You can activate the hauntings with a hex editor, but in order to have them trigger properly within the game their trigger functions would need to be located and fixed within the game's executable.

This is something that in the past has never been done. It has been looked into, but so far nobody has been able to do it. It's had people tinkering with it for over 15 years and we still have nothing. I don't expect GOG is going to magically be able to fix what the community hasn't been able to do in 15 years.

At this point, a true patch might not come unless Konami actually hands out the source code to someone else to fix and recompile or if they do it themselves. But as we know, that will NEVER happen. Konami doesn't make video games anymore and they will hoard their IPs to the grave. It's all pachislots from here until the end of time.
