I have a brief question about strategic resources in Civ 3, which relates to their appearance being based on the terrain.

Do strategic resources spawn at the beginning of the game and remained hidden until unlocked by researching the necessary technology, or do they spawn on the map once any civ researches that tech?

Specifically, I am wondering if clearing forests/jungles early in the game reduces the chance of getting a Rubber resource later in the game, because you can clear a forest/jungle that already has Rubber and the bonus remains, but if you have a spot that would have Rubber in the future, and you clear it before discovering the right tech, does it still spawn there or is it gone forever? See also, marshes and oil.

Thank you

Having used the map editor before to gen a map, the resources are generated when the map is built, and what makes Civ III extra nice is that the way it normally works, you'll be lucky to get more than a single SR, of any type.

What's more, there's a small (but significant) chance per turn that a random SR will pack up and vanish into the ether.

Now apparently, a new SR is genned to take it's place, but that means searching for, securing, and hoping the dice aren't rude to you. Considering how scare they are to begin with, this can leave you without rail or better ships until you have satellites because none of your ships are ocean worthwhile.

Generally speaking it's true, but:
- horses and rubber never disappear - they're renewable resources;
- there's a chance of disappearance, but only for resources that are in use, if they're not used, they just sit there and do nuthin' ;)
- if some strategic resource disappears from one location, it reappears somewhere else on the map - number of resources is constant.
