In Civ IV (not sure whether it's in all Civ IV or only BtS), all info on the Calendar tech says that it "centers the world map." I'm just starting out in the game, but I cannot find any information anywhere about what that means. Could someone please explain it?

It makes the minimap show the whole size of the planet (before that, it keeps adjusting to depict only the lands you have explored). It's mostly an aesthectic effect, although it can give you an idea of where unmet players might be.
