As the title says.
Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword is the second expansion for Civilization IV. You should play Beyond the Sword if you want a complete Civilization IV.

Civilization IV: Colonization is a remake of Sid Meier's Colonization using the Civilization IV engine. That one is a separate game from Civilization IV.

Thank you ^^
Beyond the Sword is the full Civ4 experience, and it's considered by many players the epitome of the Civilization series.

However, when you're looking for a change, make sure to check the scenarios that came with the Warlords expansion and that can't be accessed through Beyond the Sword. They are very fun and I can't recommend them enough (you can even play as the barbarians).
I had just written about that, then I noticed your post.

Short answer: for Civ4 I would recommend Beyond the Sword. With caveats (mods and scenarios).

Civ4: Colonization is a different game.

Thanks :) I was a little wary of the Colonization one.

Indeed. Also, Desert War (WWII in Northern Africa and the Mediterranean scenario) came with the base game, and IIRC it can only be accessed from there. It is worth a shot--pun intended ;-)
