Like the subject says, I have the GOG version of Civ 4 complete. Everything except BTS works fine. BTS did work for like 2 maybe 3 weeks then all of a sudden it crashed out and does not work. I did download the DX 9.0c and manually install and enable direct play, but that was before it broke.

Computer is Alienware m16 R1, with i7-13700HX, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd, Nvidia RTX 4070 8gb, and Win 11 Pro 23H2. Any help would be appreciated.

Found some other info where folks said changing the screen size to match the monitor in the .ini for the game gets it working. However doing so causes this (see attached) every time I touch anything in the game. Alt tabbing out and going back into the game gets rid of it, until I touch another menu. Also if I try to lower the resolution to something other than my screen max so I can see the text, the game crashes instantly. Again this is only with BTS, all the other games work fine.

Nevermind the attachment isn't showing. Either way adjusting the .ini didn't help me at all, at least to make the game functional like it had been.

Maybe I fixed it???

I reset .ini back to default. Right clicked .exe for BTS and under compatibility mode I selected Win 7, and try to start it. It failed, when windows asked if it worked, or if I wanted to run the troubleshooter I said troubleshooter. In trouble shooter I selected "it ran fine in previous version of windows, but not now". I selected XP service pack 3 because I know it worked then, and when I tried Win 7 previously it didn't work.

The game started in max screen resolution, but it did let me change it, and continued to run. I will attempt to continue playing it for a while and see if it breaks again.

This is quite annoying as it worked fine in Win 10, 8, 7, and XP. Unfortunately I don't think I can downgrade to Win 10 Pro, and still get service from Dell on this brand new laptop...
There must have been some change for it to stop working, a system update maybe ?

I have it on my W11 laptop (MSI GP76 Leopard 10UG) and it works well for now, but I didn’t play much. Tbh it’s not the GOG version, but I did have the GOG version a few weeks before and it was playing well too. I uninstalled the GOG version because it’s missing audio localization.

I did change a thing in the INI though, it’s the audio capture (used when playing online), as it can bring errors even in single player if e.g your mic was deactivated. It’s the EnableVoice parameter, which I set to 0.
