Before I tell what the problem is, please note that I do have directplay enabled. The problem I have is whenever I start up civ 3, it's just a black screen with the windows 10 loading cursor. It just stays that way, forever. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it becuase I'm using windows 10, and what suggestions can you give me to fix it?

Civ 3 or Civ 5? Thread title says one thing, post says another.

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your question, but I wanted to clear up that point for anyone knowledgeable that happens by.

You can try contacting support. Win 10 is supported for Civ3, so they might be able to work with you to get it working.

I'll contact gog as a last resort, just seeing if anyone has suggestions.

Alrighty. Good luck!
I recently updated my drivers and now Civilization III won't start anymore under Windows 10. I only get the dialog box that asks my permission for making changes to my computer and whatever I click, the box disappears and nothing more happens.

I reinstalled the game to no avail.

Compatibility mode doesn't work either.

Anyone know how to start Civilization III ?
Civ 3 runs at 1024x768 by default so it may be the resolution switch that's causing the problem.

If you haven't already done so try adding the line KeepRes=1 to your conquests.ini file as detailed in this thread.

If that doesn't help, then try using DXWnd (instructions on using it can be found
here) to run Civ 3.

@AstralWanderer :
Thank you for the suggestion.

I think I understand what happened.

KeepRes is already =1. I am using screen resolution 1280x720. If I switch to 1024x768, then Civ3 starts fine, but does not fill the whole width of the screen. If I set KeepRes =0, then I can start the game at any resolution, but it will switch to 1024x768.

Now, I vagualy remember, that Civ3 wouldn't run at 1280x720, perhaps because it needs at least 768 vertikal resolution. That wasn't a problem, because I used 1366x768 as default screen resolution. But then Microsoft stepped in and with an update subversively removed that resolution. So I am now using 1280x720 or 1600x900 in stead. At 1600x900 Civ3 runs fine, but windows (like the city screen) are smaller due to being only 768 pixels high.

1366x768 seems to be the best resolution for Civ3. Hail Microsoft!
I have asked on the AMD forum, but have received no response.

Then I again got a driver update from AMD, which made 768 vertikal resolution available again. Now Civ3 will start again.
