I am slightly confused: What's the actual patch for the GOG version in order to obtain widescreen support?

PRACX v1.08 is the most recent version of the Smac/Smax Graphics patch:

Pracx works on Gog Smac/Smax exes and on Yizi Smax or Kyrub Smac exes.

Install Pracx after you have copied the kyrub exe (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=260) to the Alpha Centauri folder.

For the best singleplayer expirience I recommend Smac + Kyrubs Smac Ai Patch. Yizis Patch offers only very minor Ai improvements. Further information on Yizi / Kyrub Ai differences here:
