I had the original CD version, without Alien Crossfire expansion. Some of the people who owned the expansion complained about factions being not balanced. If I buy the GOG game, will I still be able to play the original expansion-less version?

Yep. There's separate executables for the original and the expansion.

I'll try the expansion of course, but it's good to know you can still play the original only. Unfortunately, not all games are like this.

It's also possible to play the expansion, but only select the factions from the original game.
