Okay, I just got this game, and I've played it before on my old Windows 98 (no longer own this PC, though). I'm having a lot of trouble playing this on my Toshiba Satellite A505-S6965 which runs Windows Vista 64 bit.

Well, it runs very easily without DirectDraw=0 being added to the AlphaCentauri.ini file, but it makes my computer screen have weird purple and pink colors with some black squares scattered around after I exit. The only way to fix it is to do a system restore. I've tried to restart and shut down, but the wierd colors don't go away. Other than that problem it runs perfectly even after I exit to my desktop and return it still runs flawlessly, but the only problem is that it changes my display to an ugly, colorful screen.

After doing several system restores, I found out about the DirectDraw=0 which fixed the problem I was having. Since that problem was fixed, another issue came up. The "TERRAN.exe is not working" is now kicking me out of the game after I play for a couple of minutes or sometimes a few seconds. I've re-downloaded and applied both patch 1.04 and the XP patch, but it still happens. Even after I de-patched the game by re-installing it, I still get this issue. I also have to say that I used the pre-made installation area from the downloader three times and still this issue keeps coming up. I have also installed it to an area outside of progams (less security since I'm running Vista), and it allows me to modify .ini file without any adminstration rights. Anyways, I don't think that is related, but I'm just adding it if it helps.

If I could just play it without DirectDraw=0, that would be fantastic because it runs so smoothly, but it makes my laptop's screen output very ugly when I exit (it goes away when I re-enter the game but comes back when I exit). I hope someone can help me with this issue. I would prefer a fix that doesn't require DirectDraw=0, but if that is the only way possible, I wouldn't mind because I just want to play at this point.

Solid_Everest,

Ruler of Planet out. :D

Just wanted to say that I found out what was happening. If this ever happens to anyone else, I guess this would be a temporary fix. The game was actually changing my display settings to 8-bit after each exit (without putting DirectDraw=0). Although it happens everytime, I just had to reset the setting to the normal mode, and it fixes the problem until I re-enter Alpha Centauri. If anyone knows how to keep Alpha Centauri from changing my display settings, I would still like to know. Anyways, beat the game twice already once on specialist and another on librarian. It is still as hard as I remember.
