None of these solutions have worked for me. I know that it should run (it ran on my past devices) but on the Firaxis logo I get terran.exe has stopped working. Everything that I have tried has not worked. Does anyone have any ideas?
This is all that I have in the .ini file.
[Alpha Centauri]
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
DirectDraw=0
ds3d=0
eax=0

ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1

Alpha Centauri opening cut scene works then the game and goes to black screen with sound. When I click it crashes completely and goes back to desktop.

Windows 10 (it worked on win7).

Tried all the solutions mentioned above but still the same problem. It seems highly likely that the problem is with my video set up somehow but still frustrated. Any help would be nice.
Changing the .ini file to:

[PREFERENCES]
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
[Alpha Centauri]

ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
DirectDraw=0
ds3d=0
eax=0
FastUnitAnim=0
SmoothUnitAnim=0
MainFontSize=16
InterludeFontSize=16
DisableOpeningMovie=1

And setting the compatibility mode to windows 7 seemed to fix this same problem for me.

Ive just tried the above settings and although the game runs, as soon as an fmv kicks in teh game crashes, and the fmv's cant be canceled before the game crashes.
not solved
This is not solved and I've tried the above solutions without success. I am running Windows 10 and cannot get this to run
None of these things work. I have two laptops, both Windows 10, one runs it, its older, but windows is up to day, the other newer one will not run it.

What files can I look at or drivers on the two machines to troubleshoot? The .ini files are the same? I think it may be a video driver problem for the opening movies and movies for special projects, thats the first thing that happens after on the machine it runs on, and right where it hangs on on the one it wont run on.
OK I got it running, you have to turn off the intro movie in the .ini file, and when you start the game, you have to turn off all the movies in the game settings.

You can see all the movies online if you havent seen them.

Still not full screen, looking for that fix.

Turn off the intro movie in the .ini file.

DisableOpeningMovie=1

Default is 0. Change that, then turn off all movies in the in-game settings or it will crash.

Hello,
you actaully don't need to disable anything to start the game on win 10, but you do need to enable direct play
Which can be done by pressing start> type in "features" click turn Windows features on or of, when shown.
find "Legacy Components" double click on it, you will see "direct play" check it. click OK, done!

One more thing if you didn't install AC in default "Program files folder... you will have to run it as admin or find axstart.exe in destination of the game to choose between the original game and expansion.

Nothing above worked. :(
I'm now running on Win 10 x64 with no issues. This worked for me after doing all of the above. To try an help any future people here's what I did:

1: I installed the game in C:\GOG Games\Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

2: I edited the Alpha Centauri.ini file in that folder to have exactly this:

[PREFERENCES]
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
[Alpha Centauri]

ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1
DirectDraw=0
ds3d=0
eax=0
FastUnitAnim=0
SmoothUnitAnim=0
MainFontSize=16
InterludeFontSize=16
DisableOpeningMovie=1
Prefs Format=12
Difficulty=1
Map Type=0
Top Menu=0
Faction=3
Preferences=10111011111000011101110110110110
More Preferences=1110100111000101101000
Semaphore=00000000
Announce=111100001110101001
Rules=1101000001110
Customize=0
Custom World=1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1,
Time Controls=1

Latest Scenario=

3: I completed installing Direct Play:

start> type in "features" click turn Windows features on or of, when shown.

find "Legacy Components" double click on it, you will see "direct play" check it. click OK, done!

4: Set compatibility mode to Windows 7

It now starts right up and I haven't experienced any issues so far.

This fix worked for my Win10 custom build. No INI file changes were needed as stated. Thank you!
