On August 1st, Electronic Arts trademarked Alpha Centauri, twice.

Does it mean a new game is in development ? Not necessarily, since EA already owned Alpha Centauri, but the trademark was cancelled in 2009 because registrant did not file an acceptable declaration under Section 8. To view all documents in this file, click on the Trademark Document Retrieval link at the top of this page. The new applications are more broad than the old one.

Also, let's remember the original AC was recently released of GOG.com. Might be related to that, or maybe EA will relaunch Alpha Centauri on other DD service like Origin.

Lock if old.
I am equal parts horrified/excited about what this means.
Given that the tendency these days is to slap the name on something completely different, I am not hopeful.
It'll likely be a browser game in same vein as Lords of Ultima.
I'd kill for more SMAC, especially SMAC Rev. But Sid doesn't work for EA anymore, so there's no hope for any true sequel outside of an acquisition. And if EA does get any profitable use out of the name, that just makes a true sequel less likely, because it would be more expensive to get the IP back in Sid's hands.
COMING SOON FROM ELECTRONIC ARTS...
ALPHA CENTAURI
*YOU ARE A SPACE MARINE ON THE STARSHIP UNITY, EVIL ALIENS HAVE DAMAGED YOUR SHIP AND FORCED YOU TO CRASH LAND ON A DEADLY ALIEN PLANET
*A REALISTIC COVER-BASED SHOOTER!
* CAMPAIGN MODE OF OVER FIVE MINUTES!
*EPIC MULTIPLAYER!
*PRE ORDER NOW TO OBTAIN THE "USELESS JUNK" GUN!
Maybe I'm just being too cynical, but I can't help but think it would end up being some like that. That or a facebook game.

Have you tried the Facebook version of Civilization? I was disappointed with that game.
