Twice I tried playing far into the first case (up to getting inside the gardening tool shed).

Both times, when I loaded the game again and selected "Load game", it told me "There is nothing to load". My only option was to start a new game all the way from the beginning.

I read that there is no manual save, but it seems mine isn't even autosaving. What gives?
I'm facing the same problem. The save games are saved to Documents/my games/Sherlock Holmes - Crimes and Punishments\SH7Game so chances are it's an access problem. This often happens if you have some third-party backup solution backup up, or otherwise messing with, your Documents folder. But, really, it could be anything.

FYI I found a workaround here: https://www.gog.com/forum/sherlock_holmes_series/crimes_and_punishment_for_those_of_you_suffering_from_save_game_issues
I ended up uninstalling the game, reinstalling it to my very large external hardrive (with several TBs free space), and now the saves work.

Before I had saved it to my SSD with maybe only 2-3 GB free. Maybe it needs a buttload of free space during install or the save system breaks? I dunno.
