While there is no question that Shattered Steel's collision detection is a bit wonky, I discovered a minor adjustment that vastly improves the collision detection. Go to the "Graphics Mode Setup" in the Shattered Steel directory. When the GOG DOSBox Configurator pops up, change the Graphic Mode from "OpenGL" to "Overlay". I have tested this on both an Intel Core i5 2.26 GHz running Windows 7 and an old Intel Celeron M 1.6 GHz running Windows XP. The collision detection has vastly improved to the point of playability on both machines. While the issue with the missiles is still present to some degree, the lasers are a bit more reliable. I cannot guarantee that this is a cure-all or that problems won't persist, but I have found this one change does help.
