Suspected framebuffer issues: game menus, character creation, etc. all ok but as soon as screen refreshes in game mode, the display goes black. Any one else have this problem?

Using an ubuntu 14.04 LTS-derived distro, and experiencing the same problems with both noveau and nvidia drivers (343, I think).
