hey, is there any way to edit the controls for the game so I can use WASD to move and just generally have it set up with more modern style controls?

The SW.cfg file or the "settings" short cut. Note however that User Account Controls will block the changes. To prevent that run the "settings" short cut as administrator.

UAC doesn't affect it if you install outside of the Program Files folders. Highly recommended for older games.
