It appears that the Steam version crashes too often (unsure if its been fixed). Is it the same case with GOG or is it better optimized?

Also, does the GOG version have a native windows port or only DOSBox?

Classic Redux is Shadow Warrior in a paid source port package, essentially (its code is based off of the commonly used SWP port). You won't have to run the game in DOSBox and you'll get the modern comforts you expect like higher resolution support, modern control schemes, etc.

It's the same version sold on Steam. I don't recall there having been any major updates to it on either storefront, so it is as it is. Shadow Warrior as a whole never really got the kind of love that Duke 3D got so the small number of ports out there currently are kinda it and each of them have their own quirks/bugs (though some people have attempted to fix bugs in SWP and you can find their updated builds floating around places on the internet - a common place to look would be Robman's Shadow Warrior Central forums). The Ion Fury developers, Voidpoint, have talked about releasing their own Shadow Warrior port (VoidSW) but when that happens is entirely up to when they have the free time to devote to it being a fully functional product (I wouldn't expect it any time soon, sadly).

The free versions of Shadow Warrior here (Classic Complete) and on Steam differ in that the Classic Complete on GOG comes with the expansions. The free release on Steam, however, comes with alpha/etc. builds of the game but no expansions. The alpha build content is interesting if you're a particularly big fan of the game and it should be incorporated into the release here on GOG just because there's really no excuse for it not to be but it's not like you're missing out if you just want to play the finished/released version of the game.

Basically, if you want to play the game without setting up either DOSBox or a port like SWP, buy Redux. If you don't want to spend money on Redux, get Classic Complete and/or the free release on Steam and play through either DOSBox or a port like SWP (or JFSW).

On the other hand, the DOSBox thing is set up automatically with GOG's installer.

I'm generalizing a bit there. There's definitely still some things that'll need to be adjusted if opting to play in DOSBox on the free versions from either GOG or Steam.

If you say so. I did not spot any problems myself but only played for less than half an hour. Would not be the first DOS game on GOG where some customers know how to get better settings themselves.

That's the run of it. Like you said it could be played as is but with most of the games running through DOSBox there's settings that can be changed to make the experience better. Sadly Shadow Warrior isn't one of the games GOG can switch over to the likes of ScummVM and have it be a relatively easier experience on the user side.

I'm still hopeful that one day we'll get a really great port for it but for now I'm just grateful for the few that are there, buggy at times as they are or not.
