I like the atmosphere of the game and the stealth and other mechanics are implemented very well. Unfortunately the performance is not that great. The graphic settings - apart from "shadows" - do not help to increase the framerate at all. Seems the game (unreal wise) is not optimized for multi core and rather dependant on high CPU clock... A pitty as the framerate will drop drastically form time to time (entering now zone or standing high above the city)

Best regards

i've read your post and review and i highly have to disagree.

so here is my experience:

AMD 1700X @ 8x 3.8Ghz
16GB DDR4-3600 @ 3466 14-14-14-34 1T
GTX 1070 @ 1950/4600
OS and Game on SSDs
Win 10 Pro 64 @ fall creat. update

graphics settings: all maxxed out and 1920x1080, vsync off, fps cap off

+ game utilizes 8 threads between 50-65% ( the other 8 threads are nearly unused )
+ gpu is not fully utilized but mostly around 90%++
+ vram and ram usage is beeing checked right now, seems to not that big
+ no weird fps drops or stuttering
+ no crashes
+ extrem short loadtimes ( game start and savegame load )

+ game runs fine at 2K and 4K resolution
+ all settings maxxed out, 4K, fps cap off, vsync off - 55-60fps, no drops or stutter, looks nice!

if you give bad reviews, you should offer your full system specs - maybe tell us what CPU you use please!

Same here, had to reduce the resolution to 1600x900 and cut down some effect settings to get a fluid performace.

You are of course free to disagree. Only tell me: Where did I give a bad review. As far as I remember my rating is a little above average. Plus I admitted, that I like the game... So please read more carfully next time.

I tested the game on two systems (see the screenshots as well):

- One is a i7-8650U + GTX 1050 / Epic (but Shadows on Medium) GPU utilisation 76% -> 28 FPS (same location on the map) due to CPU limit.

- Second is a i7-6820HK at 4Ghz + GTX 1080 / Epic Settings 1440p / GPU Utilisation 52% -> 40FPS (on high location in first city in Peh) due to CPU limit.

That the game will use more threads (which it does) does not matter as long as one thread will limit - which is the case on both my machines. Where I see one core used to the very max while the others do... whatever they do. Of course I get somewhat better frames close to the ground, but only if I zoom in somewhat. Playing all evening I noticed drops don to 24-26 FPS while in combat...

Best regards

Ok, thank you at first for sharing the setup! :)

Let's go here:

The first setup is the i7-8650U + GTX 1050 seems to be a laptop right? Microsoft Surface Book 2?
The CPU is a 15W TDP CPU which means that Unreal Engine 4 will use all cores and any way, drains some power and you cpu is capped at 15 W power usage.

What does the CPU do here?

1) baseclock: 1,9Ghz boost: 1-2 cores up to 4,2Ghz ; 3-4 cores up to 3,9 Ghz

2) with 15W tdp limit you can't reach that high clocks, so the CPU does a very short time 35w tdp and ramps up to 2,7-2,9Ghz, slows down so 25w tdp to 15w tdp and something around 2,5 Ghz boostclock

3) in you screenshot you are at 75°C cpu temperatur which is not far from thermal throttling for this specific cpu ( 85°C ) once you hit the 85°C for a second on longer playtime, the clock lowers even more, which can happen on Peh Island

So the point is not the bad optimization, it's the low cpu clock on your side. It's no CPU bottleneck per se.

If only 1 core can hold the 3Ghz it's not enough because other cores will drop a lot lower to keep up with 15w limit and temperatures. Whatever Afterburner reads as CPU speed, it's not a proper read of each core!

Unreal Engine relies on core count AND a somewhat high clock. Not as high as other games need but you clock is really low.

Your GPU is good enough i think. :)

The second system is a lot better but again a laptop right?

GPU is fine again - what about CPU keeping its high clock during long loads and high temperatures?
A tdp limit and high temperatures on that notebook CPUs can be a huhe problem.

Unreal Engine 4 is really demanding so i think your fps on the big rig are ok and late fps drops are mostly an indicator for a combination of low tdp, high clock and bad cooling ( like in every laptop ).

MSI Afterburner offer the possibility to log all data ( cpu clock, gpu clock, fan speed, power draw of cpu and gpu and all temperatures ). Maybe you can log those data and let's have a look.

I can see a CPU speed but again only 1 count, not knowing what the other cores do and how long the laptop can hold those 4Ghz it's kinda hard to say what's wrong.

Which laptop is it exactly?

I can even run this game on my i5 3570k ( 4/4 @ 4.0 Ghz ) with a GTX 970 at maxxed out settings 1080p at solid 80fps+.

Something is running completly wrong here.

35 FPS on 4 Ghz Quadcore/8Threads + GTX 1080

1080 Ti, decent i7...what's necessary to keep it running, but also "frame-drops".

Best regards from Germany, guys!
Hi guys,

We improved the performance in the Wardens Hold. At the moment we are preparing a big performance patch. Stay tuned!

Best wishes,
