Hello, I've been reading around the other threads in this forum with issues similar to mine when the movies weren't playing at all for this game. I've tried playing with compatibility, installing codec packs, reinstalling Quicktime, and all that.

The only thing that seems to make any difference at all is changing the compatibility to XP or lower, which makes the cutscenes play, but only with a blank black screen. Most curiously, if I alt-tab out of Septerra Core while the cutscenes are playing, I'll see a brief flash of video, but then the program simply freezes up. Pretty strange!

Anyways, I've seen the opening cutscenes on YouTube and all that, but I don't know how integral they are to the rest of the game. Think I can just play through without them, or would it detract from the experience?

Oh, and I'm running 64bit Windows 7. The game is set to run as administrator, so that's not the problem, and the rest of the game works perfectly

Any advice for this situation would be very appreciated. :)

I am having the same problems and thought I should reopen topic. If anyone knows anything to help inertia 1 and myself out, it would be much appreciated. Thanks

That's a common problem. Reload the save, the sequence is bound to play sooner or later.
I havn't found out another way. Just safe often.

This happended to me right after I started the game. Thought it freezed. >.<
I found this solution:

It is not perfect but solves the same problem in many games.

What you have to do is:
- add a second display
- use it to extend your primary display
- move the second display to the left
Try the following:

1. Go to Septerra Core Properties.

2. Select Compatibility, then select XP Service Pack 2; Disable visual themes; Disable desktop composition. Apply

3. Run & play game as normal.

Let me know if this works for you.

I did try this, I was having some issues where it wouldn't run my game at all, kept getting that the septerra core game engine had stopped working and when i tried your solution to get the videos to run now I only get a white blank screen with the audio from the videos playing... and this isn't just in the opening, it's any video scene.
Okay, this fix has come about due to issues with the Steam version, but I've tried this and been able to run my GOG copy using the XP Service pack 2 compatibility without disabling visual themes or desktop composition, so it's worth a try.

All you do is:

1. Download the latest QuickTime player.

2. After downloading, open QuickTime and select Edit, then select Preferences. From the 3 options available, select QuickTime preferences.

3. Once this is open, select Advanced. Under Video, you will see some check boxes in relation to DirectX. Deselect these so each box is empty. Apply.

Now try running your game in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service pack 2 and let me know how you get on.
Thanks for the advice Polly but it didn't change anything for me. with the themes enabled or disabled it was still just a blank white picture while I heard sounds.
Just a thought - are you running Windows 7 or Windows 8?
Windows 7
It's a shame the options tried so far haven't worked. I'm running Windows 7, 64 bit and with a bit of tweaking the game runs okay.

Have you tired running it in Windows XP Service pack 3?
