I've been playing this a bunch, and I just wanted to encourage anyone who uses the (default) external views to spend some time in the driver's seat (press F1).
I'm a bit biased -- I do prefer to use the driver view in pretty much every driving game I play -- however, Screamer 4x4's driver view is so good that it's worth making a bit of noise about.
For starters, the car interiors are beautifully rendered (the game is beautiful in general, of course, but I think "virtual cockpit" resolutions as good as this must have been awfully rare at the time).
What makes this view so great, though, is the movement as you bounce and rattle your way across the terrain. It's difficult to describe just how great this looks, so I urge people to try it out. The sensation of being there in the driver's seat is quite superb. (This game still impresses me after all these years... the developers really did an amazing job.)
To me, Screamer 4x4 was always a simulation first and foremost, and the first-person view was not only the icing on the cake, but a crucial part of the experience. If you don't already use it, make sure you give it a go.
