Since I own the game on both I'm now wondering if playing over GOG or Steam would any benifitiable for me? Is any version better patched? Do I need 3rd-party patches to make it run the best?

Thanks a lot for you hlep.
If you have a number of friends available on Steam, then it's probably better to buy the game off there. To the best of my knowledge, there is no difference between the versions on Steam or GoG.
Why is this an argument? It does have no effect on the game itself how big your number of friends in steam is, does it? I would of course always prefer the gog version, so you dont have the need for steam anymore.
Buy it here. DRM-free all the way, and LAN networks aren't tough to set up.

I managed to get this from Amazon in the past for $5.00, DRM-free, so buying it now would only net me the extras.

I did the same thing. Bought it from here anyway for the extras. =)

There is one basic difference between Steam and GOG.com:
- Steam is just renting games and they can take them from you in any moment,
- GOG is actually selling games; you've paid you own the copy.

I have on Steam more than a year, but I bought on GOG last week, for non DRM, I want to own not to rent the game, from what I know, both are the same, but gog version have the extra, and it is better if you install the community patch on any version...
No one actually answered the OP's question
just using the thread as opportunity to vent on Steam

Steam is Steam
it's not GoG
Both are excellent in their distinct ways
