I have very fond memories of this game.
However, despite having messed with pretty much every setting option the game gives, I can't get the status bars (top & bottom of screen) to show up.
Basically this means that I have no idea how much health or ammo I have ;(

Any help greatfully appreciated.

Just a thought, have you made the window display size too large, as if I remember right, just as you could in Doom, you can expand the view to push the HUD off-screen. Try the +/- keys to change the view size.

Alternatively, if you are using DOSBox, try using Birger's WinRott or GLRott (WinRottGL).
Duh!
Of all the settings I messed with, screen size never occurred to me!

Thank you sir.

Sometimes it's the simple things that we miss. Glad I was able to help. :)
Though still, you may wish to try out Birger's port. I quite like having a native Windows client, and it's an easier interface for loading custom map files.
