I recently got the game and noticed that there are certain modes that can be played on single player, however the game always starts with just me. Is it possible to add bots? I was also wondering if it's possible to play the game online or if a source port would be required.

No, bots weren't a thing in FPS's until the late 1990's. ROTT was released too early to have them.
