Hi everyone,

when trying to start requiem everything seems fine at first. The intro video plays, the menu shows, etc. When I try to start playing, the game crashes immediately. There’s an APPCRASH in the 3DFX.exe in connection to the glide2x.dll. I discovered that I can play the game when I set the compatibility mode to anything higher than windows 98 (even Win7 o_O). When using win95 or win98, the sound gets really distorted. The downside is that the game randomly crashes from time to time. I don’t know if this has anything to do with the compatibility mode since I can’t test it without.

My question is: Has anyone any idea why the game crashes in the first place?

I changed the glide2x.dll to different nglide versions, but they all crash. Using dgvoodoo instead of nglide, the gameplay itself runs fine, but the menu isn’t usable.

Thanks in advance for any ideas. I’d really love to play Requiem again!

Crashing in here, too. Both D3D and Nglide. Not like your crash, deusexmachina, I can start the game and progress just a little before the whole thing freezes.
Gonna test it on another machine tomorrow and, if it persists, will send support a ticket.
remove all the glide**.dll files and the included nglide.exe and install the most recet nglide from here

Question is: what kind of windows do you use ?
I use Windows 7 and there's no reason to use compatibility mode. The game runs very fine with 3dfx. This is also the only recommended mode, because you'll get stuck at some locations when you use D3D mode.
how could there be an appcrash in 3DFX.exe if I were using D3D mode? :)

I'm using 3DFX and tried different nglide version with no avail.

I'm using Win7 x64 with 16gb of ram and a Radeon 290x graphics card. The crashes don't seem to have anything to do with the glide version but with the ddraw.dll coming with the gog version of the game. If I exchange it with different ddraw-wrapper .dll-file (there are several out there) the game works without having to use compatibility modes, but then there are different issues. As soon as I start the gog version without any alterations and without compatibility modes, the game crashes when I try to start the game from the main menu.

Forget about D3D. That was just a note.

I also have Win7 64x with GeForce GTX 760. The problem could be related to your GPU or it's drivers or other things.
I'm out of ideas. Have you tried PAT123's link ?
Thank you for your ideas. :) But yes, I tried every concievable nglide version. I started the game using my other PC, which is also win7 x64 though sporting 8GB of RAM and an older AMD 6990HD GPU. It has the same problem with the sudden crashes. I have some other computers with different GPUs which I'll have to check sometime, but these are my main machines, which work flawlessly most of the time.

The problem doesn't seem to have anything to do with glide, though the error report suggests otherwise at first. But if I exchange the ddraw.dll that is delivered with the GOG-release with another ddraw-wrapper .dll (for example with this one https://github.com/narzoul/DDrawCompat/releases) eveyrthing works without compatibility modes or crashes. But with this dll there are other issues like stuttering. I'll check different wrappers later.

dgvoodoo works fine, but messes up the menu. But maybe I can fix that with different settings.

I'll keep you posted! :)

Did you try the patch I posted in another thread?
http://www.vogons.org/download/file.php?id=20801 (install with admin rights)

I works for me on Win 7 64 bit, 290X without any ddraw.dll necessary at all as long as I remove smackw32.dll.

Alternatively you can use D3DWindower ( http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Requiem:_Avenging_Angel#Running_the_game_in_Windows_7 ) or DXWnd.
