...is it me or do the guards look like they're dancing rather than trying to avoid your fire? I keep expecting a disco ball to drop out of the ceiling.

If one has a dark sense of humor, the Red Faction games, at least the first one anyway, are seemingly supposed to be hilarious. Strap a bomb to someone, allow them to run like a headless chicken for a few minutes, and then listen to the sweet silence. Also, when Parker buys it he gives out some of the girliest, most shrill screams I've ever heard in a game (this man needs to take a lesson from Quake II and learn to express his pain in manly grunts. Also, not saying all girls scream shrilly...).

Glad to hear you're enjoying the game, by the way.

Oh hey Animal, I didn't know you were a fan of the series. I'd heard so much about it but never played and of course GOG fixed that. It's not the greatest FPS I've ever played but what it does differently it does really well. At the very beginning I found out accidentally I could drive that digger; that was fun!

It's a nice all around title though and plays very fast and clean.

It is very clean to play, and it's also pretty crisp, which is good. Like I said, I'm glad you enjoy it being most PC people seem to find it doesn't hold up to others very well. It is very much unique, what with GeoMod, the use-any-vehicle-that-doesn't-look-bolted-down approach, and the weapon selection is some of my favorite in any game. (Better than Halo, and it doesn't make you pick either, which is something I for one miss.)

I love this game too, for several reasons:

- the guns sound awesome. That was what really hooked me on the game back in 2001. The assault rifle and heavy machine gun are still the best sounding guns of any game I've played.

- it doesn't stop. There aren't any discernable "levels" that are interrupted by cut scenes and massive dialogue. You get through the mine, you keep going through the base, you get on the shuttle, etc, etc. The action just never stops.

- the enemies don't just stand around and shoot at you. This is the first FPS that I remember playing that didn't have the enemy run around a corner and just stand there and shoot. They duck back behind the corner, they run back inside a room, they stand/kneel/take cover, and can really dish out some pain and frustration. In fact, this game almost makes the sniper rifle obsolete because the enemy moves too much to snipe :)

- the vehicle sequences are fantastic. I know some people don't like them or find their mechanics too strange, but to me the simplicity of it is what makes it entertaining. I wish they had put more opportunities to use vehicles in the game, personally. Just running headlong into a group of enemies and mowing them down in the jeep was my thrill of the day!

- and even though it can be frustrating, this is a game that gives the enemy a one shot kill weapon. The rail gun killed me about five times in this last play. So it makes you really have to pay attention to what weapon each enemy is carrying and prioritze your attacks.

This was one of the games I hoped GOG would get one day...the last computer I was able to get this game to work on was probably 12 years ago. So it's been that long since I've played this game, and it's still one of my favorite FPS. Thank you GOG!

Indeed, they do. Very punchy. In comparison, the guns in RF2 sound like frigging pea shooters which just baffles me.
Yeah the guns in RF2 aren't as nice. A few of the heavy guns sound alright, but the best gun (assault rifle with grenade launcher attached) they made a "silenced" weapon. So that's why the shots sound so puny...which baffles me, because these games are not really a sneak-and-shoot style shooter. There is no reason to have a silenced assault rifle.

I do enjoy some of the new weapons in RF2, though. The NICW is probably my favorite, with its ability to track enemies and give their health levels.
Yeah, I remember modding the guns back when I was like 12. I had the Assault rifle with 95 round mags like the Pulse Rifles on the movie Aliens (was a fan since 4) so that red number on the side of the gun would show me a 95. :)

I also made the railgun hold 200 rounds and fire at about 600rpm. Literally looked like a laser, and after more than a good burst would start slowing down my PC. It was awesome, cut all enemies in the level in half. There was a program that let me edit all the values on the guns, forgot what it was called. But like the mercenary rifle had explosive damage but the radius was like .10, I changed that to 10. Lol. It was awesome. Good memories of the guns in this game for me, but not the ones you all know :P
