OK - decided I'd add a simple design to my ace so I created one using "paint" - basically just a black circle with some red markings inside. I copied it into the paint folder and tried to import it but the message I get is "problem cannot open file". Is there a trick I should know?
File name: RB3_Design.bmp

Unable to down load your file to check.
RB3D only supports 256 color bitmaps. If you save in any other format of bmp and it will fail.
Be aware that some colors can go vibrant in RB3D. What I would do, is I would export the files I wanted to change. Open it in Paint (This was in the days before VISTA), re-save it as a 256 color bmp. The reason for re-saving is otherwise Paint would treat the image as a 32bit bmp, by saving it, it made the file that was open give me a limited color range for it was treated as 256 color bmp..
Avoid pure black, as this is the invisible color in RB3d. Make your Crosses pure black and you will see through that part of the airplane.
What I did for color pallets is export a number of parts with the color range I liked, and would open them up in other Paint windows, and then copy and paste those few pixels of colors to use as my painter's pallet. If I just used the Paint provided colors, I would usually get some weird results.
But the key is to save as 256 colors.

Thanks; I'll give it a whirl. Also thanks for warning about the black thing - I might have thought someone was firing an old round shot 12- pounder at me :) (and hit me!) with a perfectly spherical "hole" in my plane.
If you have too much true black, the game wont let you save the configuration, though that is easy to get around. Save any file that works, configure in Paint Shop and save, and then repaint the bmps.
hi ...

applies to SP painting as well, you just leave the .bmp files directly in the Paint folder
Fly
also, the file name cannot be more than 8 characters, numbers and letters only
