So, I thought that the game only saved when you entered or exited a base. But yesterday when I took a rescue the merchant mission he got blown up right as I exited warp in an asteroid belt. The mission was marked as average, but the threat level pinged Red. I exited, figuring I would come back and try again but I reappeared in the same asteroid belt, having failed the mission but without the pirates around. Is that supposed to occur?

It occurs when you dock somewhere like a trade station or even a guild hall :)

So how did I loose the ability to repeat the mission?

I've also notice that it saves whenever you exit, too. :-s
YEah, it seems to do that too.

Good thing as well, I had an issue picking up loot that locked me out of Warp, but quitting and loading seemed to fix it, with a minimum of lost time too...
I also noticed it saves on exit. I was in the middle of an impossible battle, so I thought I'd quit and continue from the station I was earlier...

Edit: Fortunately there was a backup of the earlier save in the save folder.

Alt+F4 is your friend when you want to exit the game without it saving on you.
