Just because the US version is the most recent one and got features which are missing in the UK version, like the difficulty settings and remappable controls. Who wants this to? Post here.

Agree. A better version.
I'll add my vote to this. Maybe even better... allow both versions to be downloaded?
The US version would be nice, but I'm not sure what the chances of it being added are.

Is a possible rights/licensing issue preventing GOG from offering the US version alongside the European version? Remember, it was handled stateside by Interplay.

There was a UK release of the US version under the banner of a special edition why they went for the normal edition I have no clue though

The difference that matters most to me, is that the US version has more intuitive default key mapping (i.e., asdw are movement, mouse just looks around, so I don't have to shift my keyboard around, and the different weapon keys are readily accessible).

Fortunately, I still had the original CDs, so I installed the game (Win7 64-bit), installed the no-cd mod which is documented elsewhere, and just played through with that. The game flows *alot* more smoothly when the key mapping is more intuitive!!

Weird. No one ever thought of using DOSBox own key remapper? It even shows up when you start it (not the game icon, just plain DOSBox without the script to run the game), hit CTRL+F1 to start the mapper.

It's much better than the crappy "remappable controls" of the US version, which doesn't allow to remap everything. Just grab the manual pdf, start the mapper and go reassigning keys. Easy as fuck :P

The bad thing is you can't rebind the mouse buttons there, but as the game relies so much on the cursor (even for shooting, it's easier to do it with the red circle), the actual use of mouselook is rather limited. I only use it for looking down to pick up items or to have a good view of the surroundings. Arrow keys to WASD, strafe to Q/E, jump/crouch to space/ctrl, 'use' to F, 'inventory' to tab, 'run' to shift, 'shoot' to alt and weapons 2-6 to 1-5 (fists are useless as there's a plain sword right from the start). And 'holster' to R, even though it's pointless. But it makes you feel a little more badass by drawing your mighty pistol at scary moments :P. Wish the game had drawing animations (the reload one is REALLY cool, and more for a game this old) and more firearms, something like an old greasegun or a bolt action rifle would had been... "splendid" :D

The "arcade" difficulty just affects the damage given/taken I think, given the horrible AI this game has, it's kinda a joke. Even the dodger at the end can be shot down with the pistol without you getting hurt (run from one end to another), lol xD

So, way to go the UK version :P. I have the original (UK) CDs from loooooooooong ago and I've just beaten the game for the 4th time. Realized it had a GOG release and came here to see what the folks were saying :3

I totally agree. we want always the latest version of the games.
all you guys please contact GOG, requesting to release the US version asap.
adding my vote here.
Probably the UK version was chosen because it wasn't related to Interplay?
I'm quite confident it's because of that. Gog states that the game is published by Gremlin Interactive Ltd. / Funbox Media.

Pretty sure Interplay still owns part of the rights on the US version, so publishing the UK one was easier.
A real shame, this game needs remappable controls
I'll just leave this here:

this is by far the most useful post regarding remapping the keys

it takes a little getting used to since the game has "hardcoded keys" so to speak

basically speaking, you have to select the hardcoded key THEN select the key you want by clicking "Add" in the key mapper that comes up when you press CTRL+F1

so if you want to remap the keys to wsad:

- choose the corresponding arrow key (up)
- click Add
- choose the key you want mapped (W)

repeat as necessary

also using the manual as a reference for the commands available is very helpful
