patricklibuda: if you use Windows midi and the Roland GS stuff that comes with Windows / DirectX it sounds practically the same, it only lacks a bit of punch as compared to the hardware chip on my old daughterboard (software sound naturally sounds weaker than hardware sound - ask anyone (like myself) who has a SoundBlaster X-Fi and runs it in EAX or Direct Sound 3D mode with older games).
so, once again, with original Roland General Midi stuff, be it hardware or software, the midi music in RoA2 sounds just like the CD version - the only difference is that the CD version plays different music when you're in a pub than it does in midi mode - I personally prefer the midi version of the pub theme...
oasis789: Yeah, I don't have a hardware sound solution on my laptop, so I'm really trying to tweak stuff as best I can on the software side, between i) the GOG-prepackaged-DOSBOX default midi emulation settings (mididevice=default), ii)
MUNT emulation of MT-32/LAPC-1, iii) soundfont, as well as tweaking the in-game sound settings for RoA2 (general midi, roland MT-32, roland LAPC-1). As a total noob to midi emulation this is all pretty hard to get a handle on. I'm comparing the options against the CD audio (on youtube) though my original RoA1 playthrough many years ago, I think I used sound blaster settings for both.
patricklibuda: an idiot's question - how did you manage to use general midi in RoA1?
oasis789: I am curious about this too, could only see in-game RoA1 sound settings for Roland MT-32 and LAPC-1.
found it out myself - all you have to do is copy the GM driver from RoA2 to RoA1 - however, it almost sounds as it does with MT32 and it also has the same quirks....
