Ahh. Apogee, Raptor.... This one goes back quite a while now. I used to be playing the shareware demo for days. One of the best "scrolling action games" IMHO. Just the right balance between being difficult enough to be challenging and while not being frustrating.
Gameplay is as easy as it gets, you fly from bottom to the top through a scrolling scenery, blasting every ground and air opponent you encounter. What sets Raptor apart is (apart from the well-balanced difficulty)
a) variety; just when you have seen enough of a particular background and enemy tileset, there's a big boss encounter and you get transported to the next environment;
b) the upgrade system, where you spend the money earned on each mission to improve your weapons, add shields etc. It's just enough to always give you a slight edge over the bad guys and keeps you motivated.
This one's definitely a game where you can encounter that wretched "just one more level at 2 a.m." phenomenon. Cheers to gog for picking up this little gem.
well.. I'd be happier with Tyrian. Considering that, Raptor only looks like a cheap copy. It also has a "bug": you can stop any map anytime, going back to the base and selling what you already got. I noticed this when I played it so by doing this I could get as much money as I want. Later on, one year ago, I actually read somewhere in a review that indeed it was a big flaw in the game.

Raptor was released one year before Tyrian (it's freeware now, so there's no point in putting it on gog).
As much as I love Tyrian, it just doesn't have the same grit that Raptor does. I think that it's the combination of regenerating shields and forgiving money system in Tyrian, but it just never feels as tense to me.

1: I dont care
2: there are free games on gog.com for that purpose, fully running under XP or Vista
3: Tyrian is still better than Raptor IMO, and that's what matters. Better gameplay, better music, better design, better look.
So download the free Tyrian port and go play it, instead of complaining that Raptor isn't Tyrian. Yeesh.
I've always thought it was weird when people say that the ability to cheat ruins a game for them. I've figured out or been informed of plenty of bugs before, and if I feel they affect the fun or challenge negatively, I just don't use them. It's not like anyone's twisting your arm or anything.
